Suat Atan,
A good piece of work to unveil mystery from the task of academic writing。 I must say that after reading it, you will see academic studies that seem boring or incomprehensible to you from a different perspective。 My favorite part of the book is its friendly language and easy readability。 Thanks。
Allison Weiss,

Academic writing is a language in-of-itself。 Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves。 In my opinion, "They Say, I Say" does a good job breaking down the academic writing process by providing lots of great examples and exercises for students to try。 If you are an experienced academic writer, it will probably not offer you anything new。 However, if you're new to this style of writing, or need a refresher, this is a good place to start。 Several people have critiqued the text's reliance on t Academic writing is a language in-of-itself。 Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves。 In my opinion, "They Say, I Say" does a good job breaking down the academic writing process by providing lots of great examples and exercises for students to try。 If you are an experienced academic writer, it will probably not offer you anything new。 However, if you're new to this style of writing, or need a refresher, this is a good place to start。 Several people have critiqued the text's reliance on templates because they feel it risks causing student writing to become too stilted。 While there is certainly a chance of that, I generally disagree。 Frames are a common practice when learning any language。 You start with the basics by using templates for simple sentences, and then as you become more comfortable, you expand the complexity of your language。 Templates just make pedagogical sense to me。 。。。more

A classic that maybe is better suited for regular consultancy rather than being read in one go。 The level varies a bit。 At times it is speaking to beginners in writing while other sections are clearly only suited for seasoned writers that are looking for marginal gains in their texts。When it comes to general writing style and text coherence, I found Deirdre McCloskey's "Economical Writing" more useful and insightful (with more general big picture advice rather than detailed hints)。 A classic that maybe is better suited for regular consultancy rather than being read in one go。 The level varies a bit。 At times it is speaking to beginners in writing while other sections are clearly only suited for seasoned writers that are looking for marginal gains in their texts。When it comes to general writing style and text coherence, I found Deirdre McCloskey's "Economical Writing" more useful and insightful (with more general big picture advice rather than detailed hints)。 。。。more

I read this as part of a writing course in my graduate studies。 I found it to be phenomenally helpful in formulating my own writing about other people's writing and experiences。 The authors give many templates for good academic writing and surround those templates with insights about how and when to use them。 They use this template/insight formula to write chapters about several different types of academic writing (e。g。 literary analysis and science writing)。 They also include appendices contain I read this as part of a writing course in my graduate studies。 I found it to be phenomenally helpful in formulating my own writing about other people's writing and experiences。 The authors give many templates for good academic writing and surround those templates with insights about how and when to use them。 They use this template/insight formula to write chapters about several different types of academic writing (e。g。 literary analysis and science writing)。 They also include appendices containing exemplary essays that are referred to at different points in the main text。 Overall, this book lives up to its title。 I look forward to referring to it when writing in the future。 。。。more

Interesting resource for creative writers。 Not a top tier recommendation, but with the very short length of the text, why not read it?

Read for my English Composition II class at Boyce。 We skipped around a lot, but I'm pretty sure that we read the vast majority of the book (though out of order)。 This book offers helpful and practical tips for better academic writing, and better writing in general, and is enjoyable to read。 I thought that the chapter on internet communication was extremely helpful and useful for prompting more thoughtful discussion online, rather than disjointed arguing or comment wars, and I'm glad that it was Read for my English Composition II class at Boyce。 We skipped around a lot, but I'm pretty sure that we read the vast majority of the book (though out of order)。 This book offers helpful and practical tips for better academic writing, and better writing in general, and is enjoyable to read。 I thought that the chapter on internet communication was extremely helpful and useful for prompting more thoughtful discussion online, rather than disjointed arguing or comment wars, and I'm glad that it was included in this book。 。。。more

I first used this book in a 200-level course entitled "Writing for Teachers," a course designed to teach English majors how to teach writing to their future students。From day one, I was very happy with this book。 I have read a lot of complaints about it that say it is too elementary, or that it doesn't offer anything useful to experienced writers; people who make these complaints, however, do not understand the point of this book。Obviously, people have varying skill levels when it comes to writi I first used this book in a 200-level course entitled "Writing for Teachers," a course designed to teach English majors how to teach writing to their future students。From day one, I was very happy with this book。 I have read a lot of complaints about it that say it is too elementary, or that it doesn't offer anything useful to experienced writers; people who make these complaints, however, do not understand the point of this book。Obviously, people have varying skill levels when it comes to writing--some can just naturally articulate their points and construct publishable essays on their first attempt, while others struggle to get any of their ideas into words。 For those of the former, you may not get much out of this book。 For the latter, however, this book is invaluable。This book does not set out to offer some profound wisdom about persuasive writing that will make all of us experts in a day。 Rather, it takes acaademic writing and it breaks it down to its most basic form--templates--so that it is accessible to everyone。 Through those templates, writers of all skill levels are able to see what "moves" they have to make in their writing, not only to make their writing better but to make those moves more natural, and easier, in the future。As I read it, I found myself nodding along, and saying "oh yeah, I guess that is true!" because as someone who has found writing to be naturally easy, I have never had to stop and consider the steps that writing takes。 This book, however, outlines those steps, makes them very clear and easy to follow, so that people who need the extra time and explanation are able to get it。This isn't to say, though, that this book is useless to those who are advanced or "natural" writers。 Something else I found beautiful about it is that everyone who reads this book will learn SOMETHING or find SOMETHING useful about writing。 For me, it was some of the more advanced templates that help me do things like "agree but disagree," or "present a counterargument," without using the same words over and over。 After you've said "I agree but。。。" multiple times in a piece of writing, it helps just to be able to go find one of these templates with other options。 And, speaking of other options, the list of verbs to use in place of "says" is INVALUABLE, and I will forever have a copy next to my computer when I sit down to write。So, whether you're a teacher or a student, no matter what field, I recommend you get a copy of this book。 What Graff and Birkenstein have done is articulated what teachers for decades have been struggling to convey to their students; they have organized a simple tool that will help get all writers--students and teachers--on the same page; and they have written a book that will help writers of all skill-levels and backgrounds finally understand academic writing。 。。。more

when I read this in undergrad, I basically wrote it off as unnecessary bc I was smart and good at writing and making arguments。 not proud of that, but it's the way I thought about myself。 if I had read it more closely, I would be a better writer today。 I am reading it as I train to teach composition, but I also have a conference paper to write and an article on the horizon,,, and it's essential。 many valuable lessons。 a reminder to stay humble when I read this in undergrad, I basically wrote it off as unnecessary bc I was smart and good at writing and making arguments。 not proud of that, but it's the way I thought about myself。 if I had read it more closely, I would be a better writer today。 I am reading it as I train to teach composition, but I also have a conference paper to write and an article on the horizon,,, and it's essential。 many valuable lessons。 a reminder to stay humble 。。。more

The book is very helpful for undergraduates and especially for ESL students。 It helps to manage transactions between sentences and "argue" in a basic academic style。 It carries easy-to-apply templates and with very clear examples。 I enjoyed reading it。It might fail to provide suggestions for a "fluid" writing。 My suggestion: try to creatively modifying the templates。 If this is a mandatory book for the class, all students will likely to apply those templates。 Put yourself in the shoes of your pr The book is very helpful for undergraduates and especially for ESL students。 It helps to manage transactions between sentences and "argue" in a basic academic style。 It carries easy-to-apply templates and with very clear examples。 I enjoyed reading it。It might fail to provide suggestions for a "fluid" writing。 My suggestion: try to creatively modifying the templates。 If this is a mandatory book for the class, all students will likely to apply those templates。 Put yourself in the shoes of your professor。 。。。more

Still the best textbook I kept from college the most useful for sure。 I used the templates in it on so many papers。 I will continue to use it as a resource and recommend it strongly to anyone。

Anyone who's taking this book and assuming Graff ONLY wants you to use the templates is missing the point。This book isn't for high scholars who write literary criticism but it's aimed towards students who struggle with writing and need a place to begin。 Even though I wasn't the intended audience for this book, I did still find this helpful to keep my writing fresh。 There were a couple chapters that I've never considered and having the templates were a helpful way for me to consider a starting po Anyone who's taking this book and assuming Graff ONLY wants you to use the templates is missing the point。This book isn't for high scholars who write literary criticism but it's aimed towards students who struggle with writing and need a place to begin。 Even though I wasn't the intended audience for this book, I did still find this helpful to keep my writing fresh。 There were a couple chapters that I've never considered and having the templates were a helpful way for me to consider a starting point。 。。。more
